Hua Hin Songkran FestivalThis spectacular and fun-filled celebration for the Thai New Year is held in the middle of April from the 13th – 15th.

The point of the festival is to show respect to elders and this is done by sprinkling water over their hands. Whilst this tradition is still widely practiced all over Thailand, the festival has evolved somewhat and you’ll find that everywhere turns into an all-out water fight.

Be prepared to get soaked if your walking around Hua Hin, so keep all valuables either locked away safe or protected in plastic bags. The only people immune to a soaking are monks and babies – certainly you will not be spared, so if you don’t want to get wet, stay at home!!! Even the police keep their guns and walkie-talkies protected from the water as they usually come in for particular attention. Whilst they take it in good spirit, we would advise leaving their soaking to the locals. Another feature of the festival is that your face will be covered in talcum powder. Eye infections are common at this time of year.

Buckets of water are hurled about with abandon, some of it ice-cold and high powered water pistols are everywhere, so it’s really important to be careful if you’re out on the roads, particularly on a motorbike. There are always far too many road casualties during the festivities, so make sure you don’t become one of the statistics. Quite simply, it’s best to walk everywhere – leave your bike at home.

Songkran can be celebrated for a number of days – strictly speaking it’s for three – but you’ll find that the water throwing in Hua Hin is restricted to one, the 13th April. However, do not assume that you won’t be ambushed on the 14th and 15th, although you should be safe in the centre of town.

There are a few do’s and don’t’s with this festival so it is good to be aware of what is and isn’t acceptable from a foreigner. As mentioned above do not douse monks, babies or the elderly. Most of the older generations of locals will stay indoors for Songkran, they have seen it and done it all before and are probably not too keen on catching pneumonia either.Hua Hin Songkran Festival

Do not throw water with ice in it, you may as well be hurling rocks, the recipient will not be amused.

Never throw water over anyone driving a vehicle, you will see others doing it but it really will not be funny if you cause them to come off a motorbike.

Do not drink and drive – this time of year the death toll on the road simply sky rockets due to a lethal combination of good times, alcohol, vehicles – they don’t mix.

The 5th of December is the King’s Birthday Celebrations (Father’s Day). King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch, is well beloved and deeply respected by all Thais old and young. The occasion of his royal birthday provides his loyal subjects the opportunity to express their reverence for him. All over the country, buildings and homes are elaborately decorated and the area around the Grand Palace is spectacularly illuminated.

King’s Birthday Celebrations (Father's Day)

In Hua Hin early in the morning around the Tower Clock Hua Hin residents, government officials, students and teachers gather at both sides of Naeb-Kehard Road to make a merit for 99 monks. More than thousand people turns up for the merit ceremony.

Later on, in the Queen’s Park, Chief District Officer and Hua Hin preside over merit ceremony for ten monks. During the merit monks pray for HM the King.

my kingIn the evening at the Queen’s Park many Hua Hin residents dressed in yellow gather again. This time the celebration ceremony of HM the King’s birthday is lead by Governor of Prachuapkhirikhan. He offers his blessing to HM the King and all present sing King’s song. Then Governor, Vice Governor, Mayor and Hua Hin residents walk 3 times around the Queen’s Park and then go back to Phon King-Pet Park where many shows and band perform until late.

Jointly presented and organised by BOFFO Thailand and the Hua Hin Municipality, this year’s jazz event will be held on Saturday, 26 July, 2014, at Suan Luang Rachinee 19 Rai park from 17:00-23:00 hrs. It is free of charge for all jazz lovers, both local and international.

        This year, the festival will be organised under a “Going back to the Roots” theme, featuring a quality musical expression in Jazz, Soul, Nu Jazz, New Orleans Jazz and Dixieland, Electronic Jazz, Soul, Blues and Bossa Nova.

       According to the organiser, a number of hotels in and around Hua Hin have confirmed support of The New Hua Hin Jazz Festival with attractive room rates and festival sponsor support. These hotels can soon be selected on the official website and through online distributors and booked together with the festival package of choice.

Hua Hin Loy Krathong FestivalThis important and fun-filled festival occurs every year at the full moon in the 12th month of the Thai calendar. In the western calendar, this means November. The importance of the event is probably only overshadowed by the Thai New Year Songkran which is held in April.

Translated literally, “loy” means to float and a “krathong” is a floating vessel which is traditionally made out of banana leaves, although it is not uncommon to see them constructed from synthetic materials these days.

The “raft” will contain a flower, a candleand three incense sticks that are lit before the vessel is floated away. It is customary to make a wish before the launch and it is believed that if the candle remains burning until out of sight, the wish will be granted.

The practise is generally recognised as originating in India from Hindu traditions of thanking the gods for the rains and the start Hua Hin Loy Krathong Festivalof the main rice harvest. Buddhist beliefs embraced the festival in Sukhothai some 700 years ago and the candle is a symbol of Buddha. Modern-day Thais believe that the act of floating the krathong away releases them from any pent-up bad feelings and that their life starts anew from this day. As with the Hindu gods of water, the festival is in honour of Phra Mae Khongkha, The Thai Goddess of Water.

If you’re in Hua Hin for this festival, you really should make a point of joining in. It usually incorporates a Hua Hin Loy Krathong Festivalbeauty pageant that follows a set route route around the centre of town and firework displays. All the Thais will be heading for a stretch of water, be it lake, canal or even the sea to set their krathongs afloat. (Hopefully, the tide is not incoming on this day). You will be able to find many stalls around Hua Hin selling ready made krathongs for you to “wash away your troubles and woes”.
You’re also sure to hear one song in particular that will be played and sung all over town on the day. The English version of it goes thus:

November full moon shines,
Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong,
and the water’s high in the river and local klong,
Loy Loy Krathong, Loy Loy Krathong,
Loy Krathong is here and everybody’s full of cheer,
We’re together at the klong,
Each one with his krathong,
As we push away we pray,

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s offices in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces, in co-operation with the Phetchaburi – Prachuap Khiri Khan Golf Course Association, have organized the Hua Hin Golf Festivals for a number of years. This now annual event supports tourism and promotes golf in the region and provides a valuable boost to business during the traditional low-season.

The 2 top courses in hua Hin, Banyan Golf Club and Black Mountain Golf Course have accepted to to be a part of the festival already. This is to the credit of the Hua Hin Golf Association and Mr.Suwit

Organised by Matthias Pfalz, President of BMW Group Thailand (2nd from the right), real BMW hospitality was offered, together with the Sheraton experience in an exclusive dinner reception with a variety of welcome drinks, canapés and seafood for the slightly more exotic of palates. The Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports are busy organising the “Klai Kangwon Musical on the Beach”. This event is later this month; a play in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The National News Bureau of Thailand reported. The Event was announced at a press conference presided over by Transport Minister Prajin Juntong and Minister of Tourism and Sports Ms Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.

Apart from celebrating the King’s birthday, the event aims at providing an opportunity for Thai people to pay tributes to His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen. The event is scheduled to be held from 28 January to 1 February 2015 on the beach of Hua Hin Queen’s Park. Prachuap Khiri Khan People can attend the event free of charge. Hua Hin Municipality Prepares for Thai National Children’s Day 2015
Hua Hin Municipality is celebrating the Thai National Children’s Day of 2014 on 10th of January 2013 from 4 p.m. onwards at 19 Rai Queen Sirikit Memorial Park. In the past His Majesty the King has said that, “Everybody has his own responsibilities. Children’s major responsibilities include learning and studying; that is, they have to know and understand what they are taught and learn how to work for their future career. At the same time, children need to behave well, be mindful and think reasonably so as to grow up and become resourceful people for the country.” In other words, children are important human resources of the country because national advancement and security lie in their hands. However, children have to be inquisitive and diligent with self-discipline.

They have to spend time wisely and creatively while helping others with compassion and volunteerism if there is any chance. The more good and dedicated children a country has, the better the results. To raise awareness among Thai children and youths on self-importance and morality and allow them to enjoy themselves with their peers and parents, the Hua Hin Municipality will organise the Thai National Children’s Day festival with the motto of ‘Maintain SelfDiscipline, Seeking Knowledge, Enhance Wisdom and Prepare Thailand towards ASEAN Community’.

Activities at the festival include fun games and lucky draws for several prizes. Apart from stage performances by children in Hua Hin, young participants will enjoy free food and drinks, too. Hua Hin Municipality organize the Countdown Festival to welcome New Year. Local officials provide about thousand tables and chair for the public. About one hundred food stalls set up to sell sea food, steaks, padthai and Somtam. On the stage there performances of well known music bands from Bangkok. At midnight Lord Mayor wishes everybody Happy New Year. On the stage nine monks pray and wish Happy New Year to people and bless them with holly water.
