Pranburi

August 15, 2014 by Clrance Heck

Pranburi Pranburi is a quiet, but up-and-coming beach resort, ideal for those who are looking for an unspoiled beach and an opportunity to explore nearby Sam Roi Yod National Park.Pranburi is a quiet beach town south of Hua Hin near Sam Roi Yod National Park. A burgeoning tourist destination, Pranburi has a number of quiet and beautiful stretches of beach that are slowly seeing the development of a number of mid-range and up-scale hotels and resorts. Pranburi is becoming popular with those who are looking for a quiet alternative to nearby Hua Hin, particularly those who wish to combine time at the beach with day trips to nearby Sam Roi Yod National Park.Situated just 30km south of Hua Hin, Pranburi is beginning to attract more visitors to its quiet and pristine beaches along the Gulf of Thailand. While perhaps not as beautiful as the beach at Hua Hin, Pranburi features a peaceful environment and is located near Sam Roi Yod National Park and Pranburi Forest Park, which features a spectacular mangrove forest where a river flows into the sea.

Cha-am Beach

August 15, 2014 by Clrance Heck

Cha-am Beach Cha Am is a popular and well known destination with a long, attractive beach that draws tourists in droves. The town has a much more laid back atmosphere than Hua Hin and is generally a lot quieter. Even so, it can be extremely busy on weekends and holidays, with coach loads of Thai visitors arriving for a few days of sun, sea and sand. The beachfront dominates the tourist part of town, which is also where most of the attractions and activities are located.

Some lesser known beaches are located further north such as Puk Tien (14 km away), and some tranquil and isolated beaches are scattered between Hua Hin and Cha Am, usually harder to reach or within a resort or hotel grounds. It’s worth exploring the area as you might discover a few off-the-beaten-track places that few people know about.

The Beach
cha-am-beachCha Am’s beach hugs a pleasant tree lined road and stretches for miles in eachCha-am Beach direction. On the clearest days, Hua Hin’s tallest hotels are visible in the distance. Many visitors to Cha Am might not be aware that the town comprises much more than the beach and adjacent roads, but most tourists simply stay near the beach as this is where all the action is, and there isn’t much reason to venture any further.

Due to its length, the beach is rarely crowded (unless there is a local festival or special event happening in which case it’s chockablock) and there is plenty of room for everyone. There are a few areas where tourists congregate but anyone who wants solitude can find it easily. The abundant pine trees provide some welcome shade and the sand is fine, so the beach is understandably popular with Thais but a few foreigners can be found soaking up the sun. The atmosphere here is decidedly different to Hua Hin, but both provide an enjoyable beach side experience.

Cha-am Beach Where to Eat
You’re spoilt for choice on Cha Am’s beach. Just find a suitable place to sit by a table or sun bed and you’ll be prompted to order from one of the many beachside restaurants. There are also hundreds of stalls and vendors along the entire road so it’s even easier to find a place to eat than in Hua Hin. Since the majority of customers are Thai it’s no surprise that Cha Am has some excellent Thai food and seafood, but it’s also possible to find decent western restaurants and cafes along the beach road and adjoining lanes.

Activities
The pink bicycles that can be seen around Cha Am can be hired very cheaply all over the place, and are a great way to explore the beach road and nearby area. Cha Am offers loads of interesting and exciting things to do, and on the beach Cha-am Beach itself there are such diverse activities as horse riding, banana boats (a firm favourite in Thailand), jet-skis and various beach games including football and volleyball.

Another popular activity in Thailand is massage and Cha Am is no exception. There are countless massage shops all over town, but the best ones can be found in the more upmarket spa hotels and resorts. Otherwise, it’s easy to have a massage on the beach.

You might also see locals searching for edible molluscs and shells at several places on the beach, which doesn’t sound particularly fun but it can be quite a challenge. Unless you want to go home empty handed however, this is perhaps an activity best left to the experts.

Pone Kingpetch park in Hua Hin

Pone Kingpetch park in Hua Hin

Pone Kingpetch park in Hua HinPone Kingpetch (Thai: โผน กิ่งเพชร), a.k.a. Mana Seedokbuab (Thai: มานะ สีดอกบวบ) (born in Hua Hin on February 12, 1935 – died in Bangkok on March 31, 1982) was a professional Thai boxer and three time world flyweight champion. He became Thailand’s first world boxing champion on April 16, 1960 when he defeated Pascual Pérez of Argentina at Lumphini Boxing Stadium in Bangkok for the world flyweight championship. He later lost the world flyweight championship to Fighting Harada of Japan on October 10, 1962. Pone Kingpetch regained the world championship after defeating Harada on January 12, 1963 before losing it to Hiroyuki Ebihara. He won the title for the last time when he defeated Ebihara on January 23, 1963 before losing the flyweight championship to Salvatore Burruni. Kingpetch retired in 1966 and died on March 31, 1982 at the age of 47.

Queen Sirikit Park 19 Rai Beach Hua Hin

August 13, 2014 by Clrance Heck

Queen Park 19 Rai Beach Hua Hin

Queen Park 19 Rai Beach Hua Hin

The 19 Rai is a little further north of HUA HIN Beach after Klai Kang Won Palace (the Royal Palace) and known as the Queen Sirikit Park in Hua Hin. Easy to get to from either Soi 35 or Soi 19 on the Phetchkasem Road, going north about 2km from Hua Hin town center. The beach here is very quiet and on low tides, making here, a great place, for a long walk away from the crowds in HUA HIN.

During the week you will probably find you are the only people at the 19 Rai. At the entrance to the beach is an open park with grass, seating and a public fitness park area. The road is long and wide making it easy for parking and a great place to take the family for a day out or even go walk your dog.

At the 19 Rai or Queen Sirikit Park, there are several events held throughout the year!

Thailand International Kite Festival

August 13, 2014 by Clrance Heck

Thailand International Kite Festival

Thailand International Kite FestivalDuring March, April and May, steady southerly breezes blow throughout much of Thailand. The Thai’s, never one’s to miss a chance for a good time, have responded to this natural phenomenon by developing a tradition of flying kites. When the winds arrive, arrays of beautiful kites appear to strut their stuff and engage opponents in combat. No where is this more apparent than in the open spaces around Cha-am and at the Thailand International Kite Festival.

Now in its tenth year, the festival, which is scheduled in early March, features kites in all their colourful glory. There are stunt kites, big kites, little kites, high tech kites, traditional Thai kites, and displays of international kites. There are a variety of contests, games, and activities -all involving kites. But the festival is more than an event surrounding kites. Cha-am and its neighbours gussy up for the event and welcome visitors with a variety of opportunities for shopping, sightseeing, and simply having a good time.

Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally

August 13, 2014 by Clrance Heck

Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally

Hua Hin Vintage Car RallyHoteliers, the Vintage Car Club of Thailand, and the Tourist Authority of Thailand annually sponsor a ‘parade’ of vintage and classic cars starting at the Sofitel Central in Bangkok and ending in at the Sofitel Central Hua Hin RESORT. The cars, with drivers and passengers decked out in 1920’s attire, make the 225km promenade in December of each year. The festivities culminate with a 1920’s party at the Sofitel, which appropriately is a Victorian-style structure built in the 1920’s.

Built during the reign of King Rama VI, and only a short distance from the centre of town, Hua Hin’s railway station and the adjacent Royal Waiting Room are attractive and brightly painted wooden buildings that are Thai in concept and design, but somehow manage to have a ‘Victorian’ feel. Even if you don’t arrive at THE RESORT by train, go and have a look.

King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014

August 8, 2014 by Clrance Heck

King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014  King’s cup elephant polo

Looking for a unique weekend?  How about a game of polo… on Elephant-back.  A charity event since 2001, The Anantara King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament helps to raise money for orphan elephants in Thailand.

King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014
The Anantara King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014

Thought not as fast as traditional horse-back polo, the event is King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014entertaining nevertheless.  Each elephant carries 2 people: a mahout (driver), and a player.  As these are Thai elephants, the elephant will respond only to commands spoken in Thai.  A game lasts for 14 minutes, with two 7 minute “chukkas” (halves).  There is a 15 minute break between each “chukka” (half).  A few rules include…

Elephants (and riders) can not lie down in front of the goal
Elephants can not pick up the ball with their trunks!
King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014When the event began back in 2001, there were only 2 teams.  Growing in popularity, last year’s King’s cup Elephant Polo had 16.

Only domestically bred Thai elephants are used in the event.  Elephants are DNA tested and chipped to verify wild / smuggled elephants are not used in the game.
Young (less than 20 years old), and fit for the event.
Limited play time: To ensure well being and comfort, each elephant is only allowed 30 minutes of Polo time per day.

In previous years, The King’s Cup Elephant Polo was held in Hua Hin, a laid-back BEACH town 2-3 hours south of Bangkok.  Due to King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014it’s increasing popularity, the event has been MOVED to the Siam Polo Park at the VR Sports Club (link) roughly 20km outside Bangkok.

Money raised during the events goes towards elephant charities and preservation efforts.  To date, the event has raised $750,000 USD for various elephant groups around Thailand.

In addition to helping raise money for our 4 legged friends and having fun, there’s a strong chance you might bump into Thai celebrities, super models, and international athletes mingling in the King’s Cup Elephant Polo 2014crowds!  The atmosphere is lively and provides for a few enjoyable days watching something unique.
